Yahoo Web Directory

The Yahoo directory is one of the most important web directories on the internet, and is often considered the second most important, after the Open Directory Project.

The Yahoo directory was once a major part of Yahoo’s services. However in October 2002 Yahoo changed to a crawler based listings system, which resulted in the drop of the significance and importance of the Yahoo web directory. It is however still updated, and is valuable tool for web masters.

Submission options

The Yahoo directory accepts either ‘Standard’ (free) or ‘Yahoo! Express’ (paid) submissions. This strategy has caused many debates and controversy amongst the IT world, but has continued to be very successful for Yahoo and web site owners.

Standard submissions are open to all non-commercial categories. Any categories that are deemed commercial do not have the Standard submit option.
The Express submission option starts at US$300 a year (July 2006). Once submitted links are reviewed quickly, although Yahoo give no official guide to times. The submission of a paid link does not influence the web sites position in Yahoo search engine results.
Anyone paying for an Express Yahoo submission should carefully decided whether they think the fee is a worthwhile investment. If one has paid for inclusion the benefit from the paid link should also be monitored, and only renewed if confident significant benefit has been gained from the link.
