Don't use images in websites

'Don't use images in websites' - this may seem like a strange comment to make as just about every website uses images. Some websites use lots and lots of images. However, images will never add any SEO benefit to a website, and can dramatically reduce the SEO effect of a website.

When not to use images

Websites are about offering information and services. These do not require images, except for photos, maps and other sources of media that cannot be represented with text alone. Links, form buttons, and titles should never use images; use text instead. Search engines cannot analyse images, but can analyse text. So whenever you think of using an image, ask yourself can you use text instead? If so use the text.

  • Links - use text only
  • Page titles or headings - if you intend on using a font that is not supported on most browsers, and decide to make images as headings, don't. Compromise and use a supported font instead. Search engines will not consider the image for SEO, but will consider the heading text, especially header tags (H1, H2, H3, etc.)
  • Form buttons - some browsers don't allow an image as a form submit button. Instead use text and css to format the button using your required style.

When to use images

There are occasions when images are ok to use - when text alone cannot display the information. Photos, pictures, maps and site logos can only be displayed using images. Always add an alt tag to each image though, as search engines will consider the keywords of this tag.

  • Photos
  • Maps
  • Site logo
